REPS MEMBER INDUCTION KIT

What is a sub-branch representative?

The sub-branch representative is the vital link between the AEU and the sub-branch.

Sub-branch reps:

  • are the first point of contact for new members
  • recruit new members
  • call union meetings
  • distribute union materials
  • convey information between the AEU and members.

Roles on the sub-branch committee

The sub-branch President chairs all meetings of the sub-branch and sub-branch committee, and signs the minutes. If the President is absent from a sub-branch meeting,  those present may elect one of their number to preside.

The sub-branch Secretary attends all meetings of the sub-branch and sub-branch committee and keep minutes of those meetings. This person conducts the correspondence of the sub-branch and is responsible for forwarding all resolutions to the appropriate body.

The sub-branch Treasurer keeps the accounts and financial records of the sub-branch.

Additional roles:

The ES Representative represents Education Support member concerns/issues/suggestions.
The Womens' Officer in the Workplace (WOW) is a familiar point of contact that works with the  AEU sub-branch executive and members to ensure that all information of importance is disseminated to women members. They make sure that members are acquainted with AEU policies and initiatives which affect women and raise issues of importance with their sub-branch and at staff meetings. Often these matters relate to sexual harassment, family and gendered violence, flexible work options and others.
