Summary: The Australian Government introduced Australia’s first national paid parental leave (PPL) scheme on 1 January 2011. Claims and registration can now be made, and must be done through the Family Assistance Office (online or via the FAO at Medicare offices — details below). The AEU welcomes this scheme but will continue to bargain for improvements which will include payment of superannuation, counting the PPL as service and bringing the 18 weeks’ PPL up to full replacement wage. Summary: The HSR performs a key role in the operation of a workplace. The primary role of the HSR is to bring to the attention of the employer or their representative matters relating to the health and safety of employees. The Occupational Health and Safety Act (2004) provides for employees to establish a Designated Work Group (DWG). This group of employees in a workplace can establish a DWG. Summary: The purpose The purpose of performance reviews or staff appraisal is to assess the performance of individual staff members and to improve the communication between the employer and employee. Performance reviews need to be positive and constructive and used to determine whether any staff training or assistance is required. They are not to be used for disciplinary processes.
