Occupational Health and Safety

The union movement has a proud history of campaigning for improvements in the health and safety of working people. The AEU is committed to that campaign by supporting its members and the Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) who represent their interests.

Unions play a crucial role in securing safer, healthier workplaces. Research shows that unionised workplaces experience fewer injuries and are more likely to have an OH&S committee and comply with health and safety laws. This is because unions train, resource and protect HSRs.

There are many ways you can seek help and advice from the AEU on health and safety issues:

  • The Membership Services Centre provides support by phone and email. Any member of the AEU can contact the MSC who will either resolve the issue on the spot, or refer the member if a more specific response is required.
  • Your local organiser can also offer support on OH&S issues.
  • Janet Marshall is our organiser specialising in OH&S support — email her or call (03) 9417 2822 or toll-free 1800 013 379. There is a specific section of the website for HSRs here.

To keep up to date with current news on health and safety matters and upcoming events, make sure you check out "Safety Matters" in the AEU News and on this site.

Also consider subscribing to SafetyNet, the regular fortnightly journal produced by the OHS Unit of the Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC). Its purpose is to keep OHS reps, workers and anyone interested in OHS informed about what's going on in Victoria, Australia and around the world.
